Tangier

Only 14 km of sea separate Tangier from Spain, and the city has long been a meeting point of Africa and Europe. Above the port, the Kasbah and the medina are a tangle of white lanes, green and carved doors and tiled street signs; the palm-lined Grand Socco square links the old town to the new, and the hills west of the city look out over the bay and the beaches.

The Caves of Hercules and Cape Spartel

West of Tangier, where the Strait meets the Atlantic, the Caves of Hercules open onto the sea through a gap said to look like the map of Africa. Around them are cafes decorated with shells, fishermen on the rocks and camels waiting for visitors by the road.

Tétouan

Tétouan, at the foot of the Rif mountains, was rebuilt by refugees from Andalusia in the 15th century, and its white medina, with fountains, souks of leather and wool and small tanneries, is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The Royal Palace faces a wide square on the edge of the old town.

M’diq

M’diq, a fishing port turned resort on the Mediterranean coast near Tétouan, has a palm-lined seafront and white buildings with blue domes.
