Rabat
The capital of Morocco is quieter than Fes or Marrakech. Its 12th-century Almohad walls still run for kilometres, pierced by great carved gates such as Bab er-Rouah; inside the Kasbah of the Udayas, above the mouth of the river, white and blue lanes lead to a terrace over the Atlantic. The marble Mausoleum of Mohammed V stands next to the unfinished Hassan Tower, and the old medina is full of small shops and stalls.

Fes, Meknes and Volubilis
Fes el-Bali, the old medina of Fes, is one of the largest car-free city centres in the world, a maze of lanes, mosques and workshops; from the terraces around the Chouara tannery you look down on the dye pits. The gates of the Royal Palace shine with brass and tiles. West of Fes, around Meknes, the white town of Moulay Idriss covers two hills, and on the plain below lie the columns, arches and mosaics of Volubilis, the most important Roman site in Morocco.
