The Sahara covers about nine million square kilometres, almost a third of Africa, but only a part of it is sand: much is stony plateau and gravel plain. The great dune fields, the ergs, rise in waves of gold and orange that change colour through the day, and the wind combs their sides into fine ripples. Camels still carry visitors out to desert camps for the sunset and the stars.
