Ajanta
The thirty Buddhist caves of Ajanta curve along a horseshoe gorge. Begun in the 2nd century BC and enlarged around the 5th century AD, they hold the finest surviving ancient paintings in India: scenes from the life of the Buddha, princes and dancers, flowers and animals on walls, pillars and ceilings, and stupas in tall prayer halls.

Ellora
At Ellora, 34 caves of three faiths, Buddhist, Hindu and Jain, sit side by side. The greatest is the Kailasa Temple, a complete temple with towers, courtyards and life-size elephants, carved from the top down out of a single mass of rock.
