The Gateway of India and Elephanta Island

The Gateway of India, a basalt arch on the harbour front, was built to mark the visit of King George V in 1911 and finished in 1924; next to it rises the domed Taj Mahal Palace hotel of 1903. From the steps below, ferries leave for Elephanta Island, about an hour across the harbour. There, a toy train runs along the jetty, stalls line the path, and monkeys watch the visitors climb to the Elephanta Caves, Hindu temples carved into the rock some 1,500 years ago and listed by UNESCO.
