Santiago and the Andes
Santiago was founded in 1541 at the foot of Cerro Santa Lucía, a rocky hill now laid out with terraces, stairways and the baroque Neptune Fountain. In the centre stand La Moneda, the presidential palace, old office buildings and the busy pedestrian streets where living statues perform; glass towers rise in the business districts to the east. Within an hour, the Cajón del Maipo canyon leads deep into the Andes, and wine valleys spread to the south and west.
