Korčula old town on its peninsula seen across the sea

Korčula in 54 free photos. The island’s main town stands on a small oval peninsula, still ringed by walls and round towers, with St Mark’s Cathedral at its highest point and the mountains of Pelješac across the water.

Korčula at a glance

  • Getting there: a short ferry from Orebić on the Pelješac peninsula, or the catamaran from Split or Dubrovnik.
  • What to try: the white wines Pošip and Grk, and the Moreška, a sword dance performed for visitors in summer.
  • When to go: May to October.

Inside the old town

The streets of Korčula are laid out like the bones of a fish: one main street along the spine of the peninsula and short side lanes on either side, curved so that the cold north wind cannot blow straight through, while the summer breeze can. Stairs lead up from the main street past Gothic and Renaissance palaces, carved coats of arms and small churches to St Mark’s Cathedral, with its rose window and domed bell tower. The town also claims to be the birthplace of Marco Polo.

The walls, towers and harbour

You enter through the Land Gate under the Revelin Tower, at the top of a broad stone staircase. Round towers such as the Great and Small Governor’s Towers guard the corners of the walls, old cannon still point out over the channel, and below them the harbour and marina fill with boats.
