Krka National Park in 48 free photos. The Krka river flows through a deep limestone canyon to the sea at Šibenik, and on the way it drops over seven travertine barriers; the largest, Skradinski buk, falls in 17 steps over about 800 metres.

Skradinski buk

A wooden walkway loops through the trees around Skradinski buk, over streams and past pools, with the white water roaring on every side. Swimming below the falls has been banned since 2021, to protect the travertine, which grows as moss and algae trap lime from the water.

The old water mills

Beside the falls, the old stone mills that once ground grain for the whole region have been restored as an ethno village: millstones, wooden hoppers, flour sacks, farm tools and a donkey in the stable. Nearby stand the remains of the Jaruga hydroelectric plant, opened in 1895 as one of the first alternating current power stations in the world.

The river and Skradin

Below the falls the Krka widens into a calm, green lake where sailing boats lie at anchor. The little town of Skradin, with its church tower and harbour, is the main gateway: park boats run from here up to Skradinski buk.

Can you swim at Krka National Park?

No, not any more: swimming at Skradinski buk was stopped in 2021. You can still walk the trails around the falls and take boat trips to Visovac island and Roški slap.
