Yachts in front of the waterfront palaces of Vis

Vis in 30 free photos. Vis is the farthest inhabited island off central Dalmatia, and its main town wraps around a deep, sheltered bay: stone palaces and churches along the water, yachts at anchor, and green hills all around.

The town of Vis

The Greeks founded Issa here in the 4th century BC, one of their first towns on the Adriatic. Later the island became a military base and was closed to foreign visitors until 1989, so it has stayed quieter and less built up than its neighbours. Today the town stretches from the old quarter of Kut to the ferry harbour, with seafront cafes, konobas serving local wine such as Vugava, and boats to the Blue Cave on Biševo and the fishing village of Komiža on the other side of the island.
