The Skyrail Rainforest Cableway
The Skyrail, opened in 1995, carries its gondolas 7.5 km over the canopy of the Barron Gorge National Park, part of the Wet Tropics of Queensland World Heritage Area. Two stations on the way have boardwalks among tree ferns, giant trees and spiny lawyer cane, and at the top the Barron River winds slowly through the forest at Kuranda.

Barron Gorge and Barron Falls
Just below Kuranda, the Barron River plunges into a deep granite gorge. In the dry season Barron Falls is a set of thin streams over bare rock; after the summer rains it becomes a roaring wall of water. The railway passes Stoney Creek Falls on a curved bridge on the way up.

The Kuranda Scenic Railway
The Kuranda railway was cut through the mountains between 1882 and 1891, with tunnels and bridges climbing from Cairns to the tableland. Its heritage carriages stop at the tropical garden station in Kuranda.

Cairns and the coast
Below the range, Cairns faces Trinity Bay and the Coral Sea, gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. Rainforest boardwalks, quiet beaches, water dragons and crocodiles are all close to town.

Questions about these photos
Can I use these Kuranda pictures for free?
Yes, for personal and commercial projects. All we ask is a link back to BigFoto.com; the box at the top of the page has a credit link you can copy.
Should you take the Skyrail or the train to Kuranda?
Many visitors do both: the Skyrail up for the views over the rainforest, about 90 minutes with stops, and the Scenic Railway down past the waterfalls, or the other way round.
