White limestone island on a deep blue sea

The Kornati in 44 free photos. Off the coast between Zadar and Šibenik lies the densest group of islands in the Mediterranean: more than a hundred bare, pale islands, islets and reefs, 89 of them inside the Kornati National Park.

Bare islands and dry stone walls

The islands are almost treeless: grey limestone, short grass and scrub, cut by kilometres of dry stone walls that farmers built to mark their land and keep their sheep. Most of the islands belong to families from Murter, who come out in summer to tend olives and fish, and stay in small stone houses by the shore.

Cliffs, lighthouses and the open sea

On the side facing the open sea, the islands end in white cliffs, the crowns, up to 80 metres high and full of caves. Lighthouses stand on the outer islets, and the water is so clear that boats seem to float above the bottom. Sunrise and sunset turn the bare hills gold.
