Palma

The cathedral of Palma, La Seu, rises straight from the old sea walls, a Gothic giant begun after the Christian conquest of 1229, with one of the largest rose windows in the world and an interior reworked by Gaudí. Beside it stands the royal palace of La Almudaina, and below both the Parc de la Mar with its lake and fountain. Behind them lies the old town: palaces with courtyards, the Gothic merchants’ exchange of La Llotja, modernista houses, City Hall and the ancient olive tree on Plaça de Cort, and the bastion of Es Baluard. Along the bay, the Paseo Marítimo runs past one of the biggest marinas in the Mediterranean.

Cap de Formentor

At the northern tip of the island, a narrow road winds along the Formentor peninsula to the lighthouse, past viewpoints over sheer cliffs and the islet of Es Colomer. Halfway along lie the pines and turquoise water of Formentor beach, with the historic Hotel Formentor; above the bay of Pollença stands the old Albercutx watchtower.

Port de Sóller

Port de Sóller lies in an almost round bay on the west coast, surrounded by the Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape. A wooden tram has run along the seafront from the town of Sóller since 1913, and a vintage train still crosses the mountains from Palma.

Around the island

Away from the coast, Mallorca is a land of stone villages with big churches, windmills and wind pumps over almond and olive groves, castle ruins on the hills, and small harbours where traditional wooden llaüt boats still tie up.
