The Acropolis and the city
You climb to the Acropolis through the columned gateway of the Propylaea. Beyond it stand the Parthenon, built in the 5th century BC for Athena, and the Erechtheion with the Porch of the Caryatids, six maidens holding up the roof; the originals are in the Acropolis Museum below. On the south slope, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus still hosts concerts in summer, and from the top you look out over the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Temple of Hephaestus in the Ancient Agora and Mount Lycabettus. In Syntagma Square, the Evzones guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and change over every hour in a slow, high-stepping ceremony.
