Thessaloniki

The White Tower, built by the Ottomans in the 15th century, is the landmark of Thessaloniki’s long seafront, where crowds walk and cycle in the evening past the bronze Alexander the Great on his horse. Aristotelous Square opens from the sea into the centre, the covered markets are full of fish and olives, and the city’s early Christian and Byzantine churches are on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Kavala

Kavala climbs a rocky peninsula above its port. A 16th-century Ottoman aqueduct, the Kamares, strides across the modern town; above the old quarter of Panagia rise the domes of the Imaret and the Byzantine fortress, with views to the island of Thassos.
