The fortress hill
A path climbs from the town to the old fortress, the Grad, where in 1715 a small garrison held out against a much larger Ottoman army. Only walls and a small church remain, with a tall statue of the Virgin Mary looking out over the roofs, the green Sinj plain and the mountains around it.

The Sinjska alka
The victory of 1715 is remembered every August with the Sinjska alka, a tournament in which knights in 18th-century costume gallop down a track and try to spear a small iron ring with a lance. It has been held every year since 1717 and is on UNESCO’s list of intangible heritage. The track, a monument to the alkar and the cafe signs show how much it means to the town.

The town
Below the hill, Sinj is a lively market town with stone houses, a main street of cafes and the Church of Our Lady of Sinj, which keeps the painting credited with saving the town in 1715 and draws thousands of pilgrims every 15 August.
