The city walls and the old town
The walls of Dubrovnik run for nearly two kilometres around the old town, up to 25 metres high, with towers, bastions and cannon still pointing out to sea. Walking the full circuit takes one to two hours and gives the classic views: down into the narrow streets, across a sea of red roofs to the cathedral dome and the bell towers, and out to Lokrum. Outside the walls, Fort Lovrijenac stands on a 37-metre rock above the sea; inside, the Stradun leads past the Franciscan monastery to the clock tower and the arcaded Rector’s Palace.

Cavtat
Cavtat, the Roman Epidaurum, lies on a small peninsula about 20 km south of Dubrovnik. Stone lanes and steps climb from the palm-lined harbour to the cemetery of St Rocco, where the sculptor Ivan Meštrović built the white Račić Mausoleum with its bronze door and angel caryatids. The view from the headland takes in the whole bay and the mountains behind.
