The Walls of Ston and the salt pans

Begun in the 14th century, the Walls of Ston once ran for about 7 km with 40 towers and 5 fortresses; over 5 km still stand, the longest fortification walls in Europe. You can walk the stretch between Ston and Mali Ston, with views down to the town, the bay and the salt pans, which have produced salt for over 600 years and are still worked by hand.

The town

Ston itself is small and quiet: a town gate, a few lanes of stone houses, the old town hall with its clock and a fountain. In Mali Ston, a short walk away, restaurants serve the famous oysters and mussels from the bay.
