The temples of Chiang Mai
On the mountain above the city, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is reached by a staircase of more than 300 steps lined with serpent nagas; its golden chedi, bells and shrines look out over the valley. In the old town, the huge brick chedi of Wat Chedi Luang, damaged by an earthquake in the 16th century, is guarded by stone elephants, and carved wooden halls in the Lanna style stand among white chedis, reclining and seated Buddhas.
